Phonemic Cards
Hello teachers. It has been a long time since the last blog on pronunciation. I thought you might be interested in using these cards for yourself and your students (BETTER FOR STUDENTS 13 YEARS AND UP. The younger students might find it difficult).
These cards can be used as a wall poster for your classroom or cut up to do a variety of pronunciaiton activities.
A quick guide to the colours on the cards:
RED = VOWEL SOUNDS
BLUE = VOICELESS SOUNDS
GREEN = VOICED SOUNDS
YELLOW = NASAL SOUNDS
PURPLE = SPECIAL CONSONANT SOUNDS 1
BROWN = SPECIAL CONSONANT SOUNDS 2
You will also notice that the letters in the examples under each sound are coded in a particular way as follows:
Letters underlined = the letter/s representing the sound
Letters coloured (but not underlined) = the letter affecting the sound of the underlined letters. For example, with the word ‘four’, if we take ‘-our’ alone it is actually pronounced /əʊə/ like the pronoun ‘our’. However because there is an ‘f’ in front of it, we assume that the letter ‘f’ affects the ‘-our’ letters into an /ɔ:/ sound. We can find this in other words like ‘tour’ and ‘pour (but not all, so check with any online dictionary first!).
We will try to upload more stuff on the types of activities you can do with the cards as well as short articles on each of the sounds above. In the meantime you can have a look at some of the pronunciaiton blogs on our HOME page which covers some of the sounds on the phonemic cards above.
See you all again soon!
Its really uesful!
